Mapping the Movement: Where Black Durham Built launches a new storytelling initiative by Empower School of Movement exploring Durham’s Black artistic legacy through movement, music, memory, and place. Presented inside Provident1898 at the historic NC Mutual Tower, the performance brings generations of artists into a space shaped by Black vision, enterprise, leadership, and cultural life. Led and choreographed by Empower Founder and Artistic Director Nicole Miles, with featured choreography by guest artist Melvin Sutton, the program uses dance as its primary lens while opening the conversation to the wider Black artistic community. Contemporary and African diasporic movement, live rhythm, spoken word, and selected repertory from Empower’s season come together to consider not only what Black Durham built economically, but what it made possible creatively. The work asks how artistic lineage lives in place, what today’s artists inherit, and what they are responsible for carrying forward.
